One of the fastest ways a new Hytale server loses players is having no clear rules — or rules that exist but are never enforced consistently. Staff end up making judgment calls on the spot, players feel treated unfairly, and disputes spiral in your Discord. Posting clear rules before you open to the public fixes almost all of this. Below is a template you can copy, trim, and adapt to your server's game mode.
Why Written Rules Matter More Than You Think
Rules aren't just a formality — they're what let your staff team act consistently instead of improvising, and they're what let players trust that everyone is held to the same standard. A server with no posted rules effectively has no rules, because every moderation action looks arbitrary from the outside. Post them somewhere visible: pinned in your Discord, linked from your Hytale Top Servers listing description, and ideally shown in-game on join.
General Conduct
- Treat all players and staff with respect. No harassment, hate speech, or targeted insults.
- No spamming chat, voice channels, or in-game signs/books with repeated or disruptive content.
- No advertising other servers, Discords, or external links without staff permission.
- Follow staff instructions during disputes. Appeal through the proper channel afterward, not by arguing in public chat.
- Impersonating staff or other players is not allowed.
Building & World Rules
- Claim your build area before placing structures — unclaimed builds outside protected zones may be removed.
- No griefing, including removing, altering, or damaging another player's claimed builds without permission.
- No offensive, obscene, or inappropriate builds or signage.
- Respect designated zones (spawn, shared farms, event areas) — build only where permitted.
- Report bugs or world-generation exploits to staff instead of abusing them for personal gain.
Fair Play
- No cheat clients, hacked clients, X-ray texture packs, or third-party software that gives an unfair advantage.
- No exploiting bugs, duplication glitches, or known crashes. Report them to staff instead.
- No scamming other players in trades or the server economy.
- PvP is restricted to designated areas unless your server is PvP-focused — state this clearly either way.
Economy & Trading (If Applicable)
- All trades are final once both parties confirm — staff will not reverse trades made in good faith.
- Real-money trading (RMT) for in-game currency or items is not allowed unless your server explicitly supports it.
- Market manipulation, including artificial price fixing between colluding players, is not allowed.
Discord-Specific Rules
- Keep discussion in the appropriate channels — use off-topic channels for unrelated conversation.
- No NSFW content, illegal content, or content violating Discord's Terms of Service.
- Support and appeal requests should go through the designated ticket or modmail system, not DMs to individual staff.
Enforcement
Spell out consequences clearly so players know what to expect and staff have a consistent standard to apply. A simple structure that works for most servers:
- First offense: Warning
- Second offense: Temporary mute or ban (24–72 hours, matched to severity)
- Third offense / severe violations: Permanent ban
Cheating, scamming, and severe harassment typically warrant skipping straight to a longer ban or permanent removal — decide this in advance so staff aren't debating it in the moment.
Adapting This Template
Trim sections that don't apply to your server — a pure PvP arena doesn't need economy rules, and a creative-only server doesn't need PvP rules. Add anything specific to your setup: whitelist/application requirements for roleplay servers, plugin-specific rules for custom game modes, or event-specific conduct for tournament servers. The goal isn't to copy this word-for-word — it's to have something posted and enforced consistently from day one instead of improvising as issues come up.
